Football, How I Loved Ye

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Football, how I loved ye
since when I could barely stand. Football,
how my toe’s touch moved ye,
once I’d stopped ye with my hand.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Football, how I loved ye
deeply, daily, as a boy. Football,
ne’er a sport above ye,
nor a meal, nor show, nor toy.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Football, how I loved ye
in my tortured teenage day. ‘Though the
pretty girls, they shoved ye,
crosses kept ’em all at bay.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Football, how I loved ye
even more so as a man. Fair weather
friends, ensnared, they snubbed ye,
far-off futures for to plan.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Football, how I loved ye
when the kiddies came along. How they
devil-dissed, then doved ye,
getting right what once was wrong.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Football, how I loved ye
in my waning starting days. Football,
“Youth’s Pursuit’ they dubbed ye,
thus explaining parting ways.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Football, how I loved ye,
years and years we were apart, blaming
wives who disapproved ye.
Jealous, hold-attention hearts.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Football, how I loved ye
in retiring, tv years. Football,
shame: shouldn’t’ve subbed ye.
Knowing: ninety minutes nears.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Football, how I loved ye
in the days they called me old.
Past the ‘played ye’ and the ‘pubbed ye’,
past the mining. Gates of gold.

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 Football, how I loved ye.
Football, how I love ye still.
Football, how I loved ye.
Football, and I always will.
