Football is one big family

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Fans of all ages clapped for one minute
in respect for one of our own
an ex player from the sixties
who died a week or so ago.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Even the away fans were clapping
not even knowing the players name
no sarcastic chanting or whistling
just joining in and showing respect.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 When we hear about some players plight
even if he plays for some other club
we send messages of goodwill
he belongs to the football community.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A football club could be in trouble
it is struggling to survive
do we turn our backs and just shrug ?
No, we do all we can to help their cause.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 We wind up the opposition supporters
but buy them a pint after the game
sometimes we even keep in touch
the favour returned back at their place.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Football isn’t all about wealth and affluence
it still is a sport for the common man and woman
we may follow our clubs for a lifetime
but we all belong to the football family.

Notes

An ex player from the Jimmy Hill era passed away recently here in Coventry.

So before the Sheffield United home game there was a minute clapping in respect.

I was surprised to hear the Blades fans joining in, but what a nice gesture nevertheless.

I got involved in hooliganism in the Seventies much to my now disgust, but turned my back on that many years ago.

I’ve met some great people over they years while following my passion, fans from so many clubs all fanatical in their love of their club.

But we may have banter and even say things which aren’t repeatable here on this site, but we all belong to the football family, hence this poem.

Editor’s note:
Thanks Kevin, I would have missed this one otherwise: I remember Ernie well… more so from the football cards and stickers that I collected back in the early 70’s.

The minute’s silence was for former Coventry City player Ernie Machin who unfortunately passed away last month at the age of 68.

May he Rest In Peace.

Clik.
