Football Management

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 They say ‘who’d be a manager’
I once was one myself
A works team of dramatic amateurs
Not in the best of health
Getting them to turn up was easy
Getting them to play was harder
Warming up with beer and fags
Feigning injury, over-ripe for RADA
We borrowed a strip of red and blue
To bond our team standing proud and tall
Most of the lads had bellies to match
The shape of the sponsored football
The fabric strained a bit
As did the long retired muscles
But there was weight behind each challenge
And they won their fair share of tussles
Our first game, the crowd gathered
To witness an eleven goal thriller
We conceded every one of those goals
Referee signalling like Windy Miller
I’ll never know if it was my team selection
But our next game we conceded only four
The spirirt was willing but prospects weak
So I don’t work there any more

Notes

I put in for a transfer not long after the second game and don’t know whether or not the team continued to thrive. I feel I should mention that I was manager only because I suggested it and no-one argued with me.
