i would have loved to play for England but i was too crap to ask
it started in the playground and ended up in tears
now i watch it down the pub – with the lads and a beer

i used to wish i was Brazilian – when i got the ball –
Georgie Best and Greavesie never could compare
and they wound up down the pub with the lads for a beer

if he hadn’t lost his bottle we’d have beaten Germany –
now we’ve got a pop-star captain and a Swedish mana-geer
but i’ll be watching England – for the price of a beer

it used to feel like magic – – now they’ve gone and pulled it down
I don’t know now where they’ll build it – and i don’t even care
i’ll be in some pub in Cardiff with the lads and a beer

singing dodgy anthems – we were not ashamed
now they’re sitting in glass-boxes – on the second tier
and i’m sitting here with Sky – for the price of a beer

but evr’ything is moving and nothing stays the same
now it’s just the rich and famous playing over here
and the kids are down the pub with the lads and a beer

we were close to all the players-but that’s all in the past
the beauty of a live game – is just too dear
so we watch it on the big screen with nostalgia and beer

but i’m still a football poet and football will go on
i don’t know now where it’s going – and i don’t really care
cos I watch it down the pub for the price of a beer.
