For Hire.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Driving half empty streets on a lack lustre evening
Past restaurants and pubs partly full
He pondered the wireless, heard Alan Green screaming
At some feigner, for acting the fool.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 His ‘For Hire’ sign attracting three punters stood talking
“Taxi” he heard one of them shout
“Liverpool Street Station, and don’t spare the horses”
He quickly did as was told and spun round.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Alan Green by now livid, was going ballistic
Danny Mills calmly spoke by his side
When one of the punters, sat inside near his winder
Leaned toward him, whilst he carried on driving.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “There’s a thousand on top of your fare to be had
If you tune in to the Inter Milan game”
The cabby thought his passenger stark raving mad
But tuned in to said match just the same.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 From the cheering and shouting in the back of the cab
The punters were obviously fans of Milan
Seemed liked one or two drinks with a few of the lads
Inspired the braggadocio and talk of a grand.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Stopping at a red light, the cheering was so raucous
Other drivers in cars looked on in
At the three punters, now clearly Milan supporters
Lauding their idols on winning.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Liverpool Street reached, six quid clicked up
The cabby switched off his clock
Good as his word, the punter pulled out the green stuff
A thousand and six counted off.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 “We lumped on an Inter Milan win tonight”
Said the punter with a smile on his boat
“We won a quarter of a mill on that Champions League tie
When your radio confirmed the result!”

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Quickly pocketing the ready’s, t’was time to go home
The cabby smiled at the homeward bound fans
Before talking to his missus on the old dog and bone
Thought: “Who the bleedin hell’s Inter Milan?”

Notes

This poem is based on a story, that I’m assured is true, told to me by a cab driver mate of mine. The driver in the story had little or no interest in football whatsoever and was listening to Five Live purely to pass the time.

He’s an Inter Milan fan now…..I bet! (sic)

Carefree……we’re of Battersea, could be Earl’s Court, or The White City.

Go well and be lucky.

Peace.

Kev.
