For Liverpool Fans

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Your days of great glory will never recur,
The League is no longer attainable.
Football has changed, you must surely concur,
And success is no longer sustainable.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 When you voted to form a financial elite,
You wrote yourselves out of the story.
You grasped TV money with selfish conceit,
But you gave up your chances of glory.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The gulf that exists between fourth place and third
Grows wider and wider each season.
Money is now the most dominant word –
That’s the simple and obvious reason.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Martin O’Neill won’t bring you success,
No more than the Lord up above you.
The die has been cast, you will fail to impress,
And your future’s uncertain, God love you.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Leave Houllier be, he has done a good job,
Though you’re no longer Pride of the North.
Your club sold its soul for a few lousy bob,
So be grateful, and battle for fourth.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 There’s many a club that has fallen from height,
With memories sweet to sustain them.
Trophies aren’t viewed as their personal right,
And they know that they seldom will gain them.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 But once in a while, there’s a League or a Cup
That returns the old fire to the soul,
A push for promotion, a fight to stay up,
The sheer bliss of an extra time goal.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Divine right to glory was never bestowed.
Past triumphs will not be respected.
The Liverpool team for nigh twenty years glowed,
And deserved all the silver collected.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 But time is a hiker who never turns round
To gaze at the journey behind him.
Determined as always to cover new ground,
No visual crutch to remind him.

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 So fourth place is all you may hope to attain,
But of course you will never admit this.
But try and remember, when racked with great pain,
You lobbied so hard to permit this.

Notes

Yep, I know this one’s going to get me into trouble. Liverpool fans talk about the failure of only finishing fourth, but the reality is that 4th is the best they will achieve, unless they have billions [not millions] to spend. And if 4th is a failure, what chance for the Grimsbys, Blackpools, Huddersfields etc? Liverpool have no more right to expect to win the Championship than them. Success in the past does not give you divine right to expect success in the future. 4th may be bad, but its better than 8th or 18th or 93rd. Get rid of Houllier and you just might realise, well, perhaps 4th wasn’t that bad after all. There’s nobody, not Martin O’Neill or anyone will come in and win the title for you. Dalglish?? Oh my God, wasn’t he the start of the Liverpool decline?
Liverpool were one of the main instigators of the Premiership, not wishing to share the lucrative TV money with smaller clubs. What they have in fact helped to create is a league where money rules, and the gulf is growing ever wider both financially and in football terms between the top three and the rest.Just desserts? Rant over. Love to all, Pete.
