on fields forever green
as ev’ry fourth years comes around
a wondrous sight is seen –
this magic time this dance divine
deny it if you can
this heart-felt dream that’s always been
in ev’ry Englishman

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 in ev’ry inn and teeming bar
from town to village street
we watch the mighty and the brave
from far off lands compete –
it’s Christmas in the midst of June
at last the time draws near
when flags on cars and rooftops fly
from windows crosses stare

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 from Paraguay to Germany
from Togo to Brazil
as friends we meet in battle there
to voices loud and shrill
as once again the People’s Game
unites and splits us all
to chase and cheer this leather sphere
this thing we call football

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 this glory moment in our eye
has been there from the start
it oversees necessities
and tugs each English heart
the task so steep we cannot sleep
the longing swells inside
as strength and passion overflow
with patriotic pride

no matter when or where,
the bitter sweetness of defeat
we cannot face or bear
and yet if we could only be
impartial as the ball
as neutral as each blade of grass
would we moved at all ?

in evr’y child and soul
with gallant strife for love for life
we chase that treasur’d goal
this magic time this dance divine
