forget football?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 whither without football?
I tackle the classics
and plunder

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I dig with my thumb
through the drills of pun and punditry
packed with wonder

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I hark back to Harkness
Hinton, Hudson, Hollins, Houseman
mixing Mulligan with metaphor

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I pickle my prose
with Rhodes-Brown, Walker and Swain
though Never the Twain – for I forget how to net a score

Notes

reference to some greats from Stamford Bridge from the 70’s & 80’s, plus a token Liverpool red!

And of course a nod to Seamus Heaney, I use an image of his, from his poem ‘Digging’ – possibly my favourite ever poem.
