From the best view

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I saw Dalglish come to life
And turn spinning tops dizzy
I saw Bobby Moore shine
And I dreamed an angel silver and gold
I saw Smithy rise up like a thrashing salmon
And hold the world in the palm of his boots
I saw heroes born,
And slain by pen not sword
I saw water turn into wine but that
Paled compared to the miracle
That was George Best
I saw football through my father’s eyes
And I felt safe in the strength of his hands
And I saw heaven, the view from his shoulders…
I saw Puskas conjure magic with his left boot
And angels watched mesmerized
I saw Billy McNeill proud beautiful victorious
When the Celtic lions prowled
As Kings of the Jungle
I saw Shankly in red, his untarnished soul without equal
I saw the Babes playing on a park built for God
And Duncan smiled once more
His boots laced with miracles and lightning
I saw Pele the brightest star in the skies and
In the hearts of those who bore witness
I saw football through my father’s eyes
And I felt safe in the strength of his hands
And I saw heaven, the view from his shoulders…
I saw Maradona punch the sky with his flawed hand
And then watched as the angel returned with a gospel
So pure it jumped from Jacob’s ladder before the eyes
Of the English defence and then raced to the arms of immortality
I saw Cruyff pick up Van Gogh’s oils brushes and
Paint scenes of such colour and beauty even the sun had
To rub her eyes to tumble from a dream
I saw the night plead with the day to swap places because
It too longed to see the glory that was Eusebio
I saw the fields of childhood forget that they had passed
And come back to life their tears all wiped dry
I saw football through my father’s eyes
And I felt safe in the strength of his hands
And I saw heaven, the view from his shoulders…
