Getting Stuck In At Christmas

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I dunno how I manage it all season
sloping off and catching all those games
pubs get kinda smokey but the atmosphere’s electric
even though it’s never quite the same

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 now some bang on with pint in hand and ramble
spreading all their diatribe around
it’s sometimes like they’ve slapped you in the belly with a fish
especially when the champion-chips are down

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 sometimes I just wonder what those passers-by must think
standing there and watching grown men scream
showing more emotion than a bloke who’s won on Lotto
dancing round in front of some distorted screen

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 so when I’ve got a bob or two I jump upon that train
Stroud’s a hundred miles and hours away
but when I was a kid you know I lived just down the road
and I remember one mad Christmas Day

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 ’cause we were so erratic long before the money came
our defence was like a leaky door
and though we banged in seven versus Pompey on that day
we still contrived to somehow let in four!

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 and nowadays I get there when I’m homesick
I’ve got used to having to be sat
in betwen the loyal punks and ‘luvvies’
never thought that it would come to that

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 over zealous stewards taking notes on those who rise
only standing up for their own team
but doesn’t everyone stand up for champions?
excuse me while I hang my head and scream

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 but every late December it’s a nightmare
with all of those excuses I have made
and it’s not just the dread of being stuck with Nan and Fred
it’s just because a game is being played

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 it always goes a little weird at Christmas
hectic games all coming in a row
anti-social moments with the family for tea
tryin’ to figure how you’re gonna go

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 secret little tranny in your pocket
earphones hidden slyly in your ear
saying ‘ummmm’ and nodding yes to strangers
while a game is going on somewhere

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 and every year i say that I won’t bother
but every time I’m desperate for the score
so even though it’s Christmas and whatever that may mean
I know I’ll be there somehow for sure

Notes

this after remembering crazy unpredictable Christmas games,
getting off to a great holiday start by thumping
someone 5-0 on ChristmasEve at home….then losing 6-0 away on Boxing Day to QPR or someone.. then drawing 4-4 two days later and winning 6-5 on New Years’s Day…and stuff like that. OK, the memory gets a bit foggy, but I do remember pretending I had to change a tyre for 90 minutes one edgy open-house day , waiting in my car for a Roy Of The Rovers comeback that never happened.. and finally walking back in crestfallen when we lost 6-0 to QPR that Boxing Day….
maybe players drank a little in those days…no surely not!…
but I did go to the Christmas morning Blues- Portsmouth 7-4 game (1957) aged 9….at least you got your nine-pence worth with 11 goals in those days …
