GLT – again!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 FA Cup Final, Saturday 5th May 2012, 17:15 k.o.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Chelsea 2 Liverpool 1

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 To the victors – the spoils
And to see blue ribbons on the silverware
Of a blue riband event, augurs well

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 To the victors – the spoils
Enhanced confidence, as we look ahead to
The Champions League final, to Bayern quell

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 To the victors – the spoils
But a garlanded event, spoiled
By its own hosts – who dumbly diminish

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Why the break with tradition?
Why not a three o’clock kick-off?
Why not played after the season finish?

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 A match that will be remembered
More for the occasion, than the game itself
For the spoiling of convention and ….

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 GLT, rearing its ugly head again, so soon after the semi
Chelsea benefitting again, though probably rightly so
Countless replays inconclusive
But consensus: the officials called it right
No matter, that Carroll wheeled away in delight
Instead of making sure, just like Geoff Hurst, 46 years before
Sure, a great Cech save, but officials waive, the call of ‘goal’
Was the whole…. ball over the line, as the rules define?
To the naked eye, an equal cry, of yes or no, we could bestow
But tv angles inconclusive, and not conducive, to a definitive call
Leaving only to surmise: play to the whistle – and play the ball !

Notes

3 days later, Liverpool exact their revenge in the Premiership, winning 4-1
And each still have another league game to play!
