Going Underground

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 And we thought we had
put those dark days behind us:
racist graffiti daubed on the
walls of Anfield to ‘greet’
the arrival of the great John Barnes;
monkey noises raining
down from the terraces;
banana skins strewn on the pitches.
But that was in the eighties.
Now we know it’s still
lurking beneath the surface,
something dirty at the bottom
of a very murky pond.
Clamour of cramped Chelsea ‘fans’
on a crowded subway train;
Parisian passenger pushed twice;
gleeful racist chanting
from mob on board
all serve as a grim reminder
of those dark days
which clearly haven’t gone away.
