Good times

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 All the world’s a circle, said the poet
and there’s a circularity to time.
Football can be cruel – and don’t we know it –
but then again, it can be quite sublime.
Too long now we have played the role of mourner
following behind the funeral car.
They say the good times lie around the corner –
here’s hoping that the corner isn’t far.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 We watch in envy other stars ascending
while ours is smothered in this dreadful cloud.
At times, it seems, the gloom is never-ending,
no light escaping from this dusky cloud.
The script would be ideal for Brothers Warner
if the brightest thing in heaven were our star.
They say the good times lie around the corner –
here’s hoping that the corner isn’t far.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The heat is on and everybody’s sweating
and struggling to breathe through all the steam.
Don’t tell us we are favoured in the betting,
it only serves to magnify the dream.
We need to find the door out of this sauna
and sink a nice cool pint down at the bar.
They say the good times lie around the corner –
here’s hoping that the corner isn’t far.

Notes

Oh Lord, let this be our year. Please…
