Great Ex-spec-tations

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 A ‘keeper for Preston North End,
So an old story goes,
Sported a pair of spectacles
Perched on the bridge of his nose..
This goalie was slightly shortsighted,
Taking a somewhat dim view,
But with Proud Preston being a top team,
He didn’t let many goals through…

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Even played in an F. A. Cup Final
And if his specs aroused mirth,
One wonders if they who laughed loudest,
Had themselves ever trod hallowed turf?
Football fans raise up your glasses,
Toast the goalkeeper, gallant and brave,
Who gave entire new meaning
To the term ‘Spectacular Save’…

Notes

J.F. Mitchell, goalkeeper for Preston North End, played first class football, including the 1922 F. A. Cup Final, wearing spectacles.
