Greavsie

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 My favourite ever footballer
and what a warm and funny bloke,
but I’ve just heard the sad news
that Jimmy has had a stroke.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I first saw him play when I was a lad
watching from the terraces in awe,
he took my team’s defence apart
as he banged in two of Spurs’ four.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 His pictures took pride of place
in scrapbooks and on my wall,
I liked Bestie and Bobby Charlton
but Jimmy was my idol of football.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I’d pretend to be just like him
when dribbling with ball at my feet,
dreaming I was at White Hart Lane
instead of playing in our street.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The word legend is used a lot now
for average players of football,
but it does belong to Jimmy Greaves
the greatest English striker of them all.

Notes

I hope Jimmy pulls through as I hear he’s in intensive care. They say you should never meet your hero, but I met Greavsie when he was at Birmingham’s Central T.V.studios when him and Ian.St.John were filming their popular programme years back.He signed a book I took in and I was so starstruck I hardly said a word to him. He was cheery and friendly and I remember thinking I’ve just shook hands with one of England’s greatest ever players who I’d pretend to be as a youngster, so surreal.
Get well soon Greavsie !
