Half a loaf

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I’ve never been an ambitious sort of person –
half a loaf is better than no bread.
4-0 thumpings do not leave me cursin’,
1-0 victories do not turn my head.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I don’t expect we’ll challenge for the title –
mid-table coffee has a lovely smell.
The only thing that I consider vital
is that we don’t descend back into hell.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I do not need my fix of cups and honours –
I do not crave a dream world like a junkie.
A brand new chapter’s suddenly upon us
but slowly, slowly’s how to catch a monkey.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 If we lose a match or two, what matters?
Do things right, success will come at length.
A mirror not secured well often shatters –
firm foundations guarantee its strength.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 So let us not treat losses with attrition
and cut out all the European talk.
Let’s revel in our current league position
ahead of little teams like Bohs and Cork.

Notes

Sorry eds – a few poems I wrote for the Shels matchday programme that I neglected to post here
