Handbags and Handshakes At Noon

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 am I alone here in my thoughts
how did it come to this?
we go in hope for football
not customs we might miss
when handshakes turn to handbags
and best friends turn away
the media circus rumbles on
and dominates the day

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 when private lives affect a game
it’s hard to understand
while wars we cannot halt nor end
go on in foreign lands
when all our heroes prove to be
as human as the next
when partners can be dumped for good
by email or by text

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 when earthquakes shatter homes and lives
and tear our hearts apart
when people die from lack of food
it sets this stuff apart
and makes us long for skill and style
and passion on the field
and not the endless scandals
that daily are revealed

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I liked what Avram said last night
in spite of their commotion
that even in administration
“football is emotion”
we rise above the other stuff
like little kids at play
we scream and hug each other
when glory comes our way
we hang our heads in shame and cry
when we can do no more
but something keeps us focused
to try just like before.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 where will it end I wonder
and how would we exist
if England won the World Cup
would you deny a kiss
from Rooney or from Stevie G
if you were by their side
It might not be that blokey but…
I’d kiss them back with pride.
