“Some say football is a matter of life and death,
I am very disappointed with this attitude.
I assure you it’s much more serious than that”

About how the most important game will always be away
About what it means to be stand on the terrace
Didn’t the late Bill Shankly once say
“If you’re a member of the Kop
it feels like you’re a member of a Big Society
where you’ve got thousands of people all around and about you”

About the offsides and the penalties
The corners and the goalkicks
The throw ins and free kicks
The red cards and the yellows
About the minute’s silence
About how football can make you feel
The joy, the excitement, the jubilation
The anguish, the anger and the disappointment

I simply have this to say……
You’d be surprised because some of us do understand
About how it’s just not a sport it’s so much more than that
About what that place in the top six means
The offside rule – easy
Of course the most important game is always away
It’s called Sod’s law
On the terrace on a Saturday afternoon or Tuesday evening
Theres no where else I’d rather be
About the rules of the game
Well there’s only one rule that really matters
And thats to score more then the other team
About how football can make you feel
The joy, the excitement, the jubilation
The anguish, the anger and the disappointment
Well let me ask you this…
Have you ever met a man who can experience all the emotion
in the space of ninety minutes?”

Notes

I decided to write this poem in response to Kevin Hall’s poem “She just doesn’t understand”, this is a common misconception made by men about women and football, that while I hasten to add is true about some women it is not true about all of us, I myself am football crazy and also a woman in fact I’ve been supporting Liverpool for three years now and my Dad for fourty years and yet in some aspects I know more than he does and he will freely admit that.

I’m sure you appreciate that Kevin’s poem was tongue in cheek.
If it wasn’t, we probably wouldn’t allow it.

He did say ‘most women’ where perhaps he could have said ‘some women’.
