Homage to Catalonia

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Casting my mind back
Over the track
That led me to here
And this reverie after a lunch time beer,
Me with a napkin down on my knees,
Scribbling these lines up in the Pyrenees,
With cacti growing right next to moist, wild iris,
And teazles by the vineyard, figs and trellis,
Gloucestershire and Catalan flowers
Growing in unison together,
Right where Laurie Lee and the International Brigade
Slipped through the passes in these mountain glades,
To fight the Falange and Franco,
Nearly sixty years ago.
And now in this modern day and age,
We pay Catalonia homage
By wearing a football shirt,
And History lies buried in the dust and the dirt,
Bought up and paid for
By the universal sponsor.
