I Heard The News Today – oh Roy

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The fans wanted Harry Hotspur
Or Jack the Lad or Sam the Spark
Flash Gordon or Psycho Sid
Any of those would hit the mark

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The men in grey pick men in grey
That’s the way it is
There no room for Champagne Chas
Excitement, froth or fizz

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 We need to stop the hype
Squash the frantic expectation
A chain of events, a shame of scandal
Has left a stain upon our nation

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 England need to knuckle down
Get the players back to basics
Get them focussed, training hard
That’s the truth and they must face it

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 No flip-flops, Twitter or alcohol
No WAGs, no concessions
No seedy press relevations
Or kiss and tell confessions

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The players should get down and dirty
Play the pitch and not the field
Playing for your country is serious
Not a glamour showcase Charity Shield

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Roy Hodgson has dignity
He’s a gentleman with good manners
It doesn’t mean he can’t do the job
Leave the wit to pitchside banners

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 We’ve had some days we’d rather forget
With Brolly McLaren and Nancys Sven
I’ll settle for solemnity with our Roy
If he can turn our mob into men

Notes

The England Manager is there to build a squad to win football tournaments. He is not there to tell jokes or win popularity contests.
We need to lose the arrogance and assumption that we will win, and plan and organise a method of winning. I don’t want to hear anything about the players other than their name and number.
As far as English football goes, we are overdue restraint and humility.
