I Know I’d Play Football Again

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 If I could go back to when I was just seven,
I know I’d play football again.
Time seemed to stand still and my life seemed like heaven
before we grew up to be men,
back when my only goals were the ones between posts,
and my own all I had to defend.
If I could go back to when I was just seven,
I know I’d play football again.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 If I could go back to when I was a teen,
I’m certain I’d play even more
for, since that time, other pursuits I have seen
leave me wondering what they are for.
For all that I have, I have no time machine,
so, for all that I have, I am poor.
But, if I could go back to when I was a teen,
I’m certain I’d play even more.

I’d keep that shot under the bar.
Now, thirty years on, I sit here with the knowledge
that it was so close, yet so far
and, how, in my case, it took me to the fall age
to think about who we all are.
If I could go back to when I was in college,
I’d keep that shot under the bar.
