I Was There!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Football grounds were built for men
And women in stout shoes and overcoats
No place for nippers back then
Terracing unsuitable for nursery slopes

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Have you been to the match?
Yeah, we won 1-0, scored with seconds to go
Who scored?
Then I realised, I didn’t know

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Thing is you see, I’m not over tall
I stood on the terrace but couldn’t follow the ball
The only play I saw was on the nearside wing
I just went along to cheer and chant and sing

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I watched Stevie Heighway take the corners
I could see the channel where he sped
The rest of the time I was bobbing about
Trying to see past peoples heads

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The crowd was like a heaving ocean
Craning forward at every attack
When a goal went in there’d be a surge
And you could end up ten yards further back

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 You never got bored with your neighbour
Because you never stood near him for long
When the ball went down the other end
You’d be sandwiched and moved along

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 It was oohs and aahs, an open air display
The strikers were launching the rockets
Excitement fuelled the atmosphere
Sherbet fountains exploded in pockets

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 It was time to head home
Within minutes, the crowd had gone
It was straight off to the paper shop
For a Pink’Un to see what went on!

Notes

I can remember not being able to see much from the terraces but the atmosphere was unbeatable. Perhaps it’s why I prefer listening to radio commentary to watching a game on TV!

Steve Heighway had plenty of the ball during the game in question, but Norwich won 2-1. Yes, really…
