In the Land of the Yak

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Are footballers paid a sensible wage,
Or do they earn all they can grab?
Do their agents grow fat, like plump, overfed cats,
In the Land, in the Land of the Yak?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Are the prices of match-tickets cheerful and cheap?
(Say, the same as a pint or Big Mac.)
Or are they sky-high (and nobody says why,)
In the Land, in the Land of the Yak?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Is a Gaffer allowed to get on with the job?
Or does failure mean he gets the sack?
Is his Chairman much more than a rich, foul-mouthed yob,
In the Land, in the Land of the Yak?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Do the Linesmen and Ref get an ounce of respect
From the players, and fans at their back?
If you point to the Spot, do you risk getting shot,
In the Land, in the Land of the Yak?

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Is the colour of skin a significant thing?
Does it matter if you’re white or black?
Are you booed for your Faith, for your Roots or your Race,
In the Land, in the Land of the Yak?

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Have a hundred or so ever failed to come home,
‘Cos the Stadium was a death-trap?
Has a fan with a knife ever taken a life,
In the Land, in the Land of the Yak?

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Such questions aren’t easy to answer.
Are we dealing with fiction or fact?
But I’d sure like to know, and I’d just love to go
To the Land, to the Land of the Yak!

Notes

You may be wondering what or where exactly the Land of the Yak is. Well, it could be a) Nigeria, homeland of the Everton striker, Yakubu b) Tibet, homeland of the shaggy, ox-like animal c) a mythical, unattainable Football Utopia. I will let you decide for yourselves…
