as if on cue for some
the sudden sun glares menacingly down
like frowning bosses or old school headmasters
upon our long drained toils
exposing our failings
like light into a darkened cave
for others it shines radiantly
upon all they have sown – season long
applauding rewarding
as buds take flower
finally – so real so close yet so unfair
in the last weeks of the season

it’s ‘ this is it my friend’
it’s make or break and time to be counted
so bring on the clichés
a field day for the pundits
a tense one for the punters
in the last weeks of the season

we look for something – anything
from phone- ins to chat pages
the papers to texts
or even here perhaps a poem a line
words of encouragement
like water in a desert
where are they when you need them most
in the last weeks of the season?

last August seems a different life
the next one can’t come too soon
and what alternative
who and what to get me through Summer
no World Cup no Euros
the risk of skin cancer in the sun
slim chance of a break
shopping malls with a partner
no-one told me it could feel like this
no-one told me it would be like this
no-one said a word
and no-one warned me
that no-one can help
in the last weeks of the season

directors stretch pockets
and turn to fans where players fail
with coaches for the faithful
on daunting travels with faces in hands
radios to ears and vacant stares
joy and tears from the same basket
and in those last few games
you turn and say aloud
how did it come to this?
a sign woud help
a white dove over the stand..
a balloon drifiting into the net before the game..
my old lost lucky socks re-appearing miraculously
anything but just tell me even now
can we do it
in the last weeks of the season?
