Inevitability

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Children can be very cruel,
Dispensing hate and ridicule,
Because it is too hard to warm
To those poor sods who don’t conform.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Here’s a tale of one of these,
A kid who tried too hard to please.
His little heart was firmly set
On starring as the teachers’ pet.
Saucered eyes and fit to burst,
His hand would always shoot up first.
Though teachers seemed to find such crawling
Unattractive and appalling.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But in the yard he tried with guile
And wide ingratiating smile
To infiltrate our motley gang
Rebelling ‘gainst the whole shebang.
And though we showered him with scorn
And left him standing all forlorn,
Pulled his tie into a knot,
Adorned his back with pools of snot,
Although he was, in that school, friendless,
And bullying was almost endless,
Still he’d go where’er we went,
Hoping we’d perhaps relent.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Looking back, what men were we
To treat him so despicably?
A youngster so completely tarred
Must surely turn out badly scarred.
What cripples do we help create,
Through selfish, immature hate?

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Twelve years later on and he
Became a well-known referee.
