1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I thought it must be a joke
kids having to use a soft sponge ball
why not wrap them up in cotton wool
just in case they trip over and fall ?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 This is health and safety gone mad
is this Malvern teacher a bit of a case ?
the footballs today are so much lighter
than those that were leather and lace.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 We used to play with what was at hand
as long as it was round that would do
sometimes it was like heading a medicine ball
so that’s why our foreheads often turned blue ?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 These silly rules get on your nerves
children get hurt they whinge and moan
but kids are a lot tougher than you think
so why not just leave our sport alone ?

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 They won’t be happy until football gets banned
boys will be told to play Netball instead
but they’ll end up stopping that as well
as the ball may hit little Jimmy on his head !

Notes

Reading Jim Dolbear’s poem Spongers in a Jam, it made me realise how lucky I was growing up in the era I did, we never had any of this nonsense.
The heavy leather balls were a bit dodgy I admit they did give you some cracking headaches, but the ones now are more like beach balls !
I pity the kids because they’ll end up not being able to do much at all.
