Last minute goal

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 When the game’s nearly done
and we think that we’ve won,
I will get me some mortar and bricks.
I’m gonna build me a wall
over seven feet tall
with a bit of oul’ lime in the mix.
I’ll ensure it’s quick-set
right in front of our net
and doesn’t have the hint of a hole
because I can’t take
yet another mistake
that leads to a last minute goal.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 When the fat lady clears
her throat, as time nears,
I will nail planks of wood ‘tween the posts,
for the team really needs
to hang onto leads
and stop being generous hosts.
I will nail our goal shut,
letting nothing in, but
the most industrious, burrowing mole,
for I’m losing my hair
in a sense of despair,
conceding a last minute goal.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 When the game’s nearly ended
and we’ve stoutly defended
and we’ve given everything that we’ve got,
I’m gonna get the marines
dressed in khakis and greens
to camp on our penalty spot.
They’ll have permission to fire
on any wannabe high-flyer
who thinks that to score would be droll.
For I’ll be over the edge,
sitting high on a ledge
and starting to cluck
like a big pregnant duck
and howling at the moon
on a Spring afternoon
if we leak one more last minute goal.
