League of Nations

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I patrol a small outpost,
Pacing up and down,
Clapping my hands,
Marking my territory
With the heel of my boot;
I look out for our opponents
Across no-man’s land,
They are out there,
Exercising and shouting,
Taunting me with reminders
Of past defeats, humiliating blunders,
But I am not alone, I have comrades,
Brothers who are on my side,
Waiting, like me, for the shrill
Whistle to blow,
For the action to begin;
We line up for roll-call:

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 We huddle together and sing a song to calm our nerves;
Our captain tells us to take up our positions,
I go back to my little outpost, flag in hand,
My hands sweat in my oversized gloves
But I don’t care for I have the world at my fingertips,
The world is a football.

Notes

Soccer at all levels of involvement has great potential to be a force for good in our society. Football teams and clubs can be microcosms of mutual respect and co-operation between people of different races and cultures. A football is a relatively small sphere, so is the world in its cosmic context. Let’s enjoy them both while we can!
