1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Every football club has a legendary player
and they don’t have to be a household name
but to the fans that player was just special
because he did it all for the love of the game.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 A legend is sometimes just a real character
that’s why at Coventry we all loved Micky Quinn
fans would shout “who ate all the pies?”
because Micky was far from svelte or thin.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Some legends only ever play for one club
like Preston’s wing wizard Sir Tom Finney
that’s why they can get honoured with a statue
for all their devotion and true loyalty.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 But most legends are really famous
like George Best, Jimmy Greaves, Denis Law,
and England’s World Cup winning team
especially Geoff Hurst and captain Bobby Moore.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Managers can be legends as well
like Bobby Robson, Jock Stein, Sir Alf Ramsey,
then there are those who are above legendary status
like Brian Clough and Liverpool’s Bill Shankly.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 So as long as we have Football we’ll have legends
one could even be playing for your club today
and you can tell your grand kids in the future
that he was an even better player than Pele !

Notes

Been reading an interesting book on Talk Sport’s top one hundred sporting legends, which inspired this poem.

Brian Clough was voted number one legend, he even gave himself an O.B.E. but it stood for Old Big Ead !

We all have our favourite player from our own clubs, so to us they will always be a legend.
