Legends

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Legend is a word that now is way too loosely used
young pups just out of nappies can maybe be excused
Prodigy, genius, wonder boy, a marvel, superstar
With fancy haircut, stylish clothes or flashy sporty car
Just as a quiet reminder, modern players wrapped in cotton
This is an ode to heroes past, lest they be forgotten
Unless you saw the following then stop and think again
Legend? Are you really sure?, come with me way back when.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Davey Barry strode around, he always wore a frown
No fancy haircut on his head, the dual in our crown
Masterful in centre field, for opponents a right bummer
The Bayern defence is leaking, someone call the plumber
Deadly from set pieces, pierced defences like a knife
He also scored the best live goal I ever saw in real life
While Davey had the guile and brawn, Patsy had the skill.
Not of Gurranabraher, more than likely from Brazil

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 He jinked and sprayed the passes, precision of an engineer
The most skillful player ever to have worn the City gear.
New player comes across the pond, eager to astound
Warming up and down the line, wearing out the ground
Fancy boots and all the moves, trying to excess,
When a sub was called for, the lad was half undressed
The gaffer points the finger back but past our new recruit
Patsy stubs the fag out and then laces up his boots.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Deccie was our leader, ‘Psycho’ served it to ‘em straight
He gave his all, his everything, some tackles slightly late
Left wingers hated every game, were wanton to despair.
Knowing they’d be conquered as well as kicked up in the air
Deccies type of sandwiches were sadly short of bread
Usually opposing player between him and The Shed
He was our premier combatant, Inspired us with orations
Ninety three and ninety eight fulfilled our dedications

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 New York born but from Athlone, a legend to be fair
With more appearances for us than any other player
Defenders, keepers everywhere scourged by his persistence
He scored goals by the bagful as well as some assistance
Some finishes were ordinary, others were sublime
He finished with a total of one hundred twenty nine
Johnny C please come right in, a legend of the game
And take your place with all the rest in Citys Hall of Fame.
