Long High Balls

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We triumphed over City by
A solitary goal,
Though when the ball is in the sky,
It’s harder to control.
The ref in the Setanta Cup
Made several dodgy calls,
But why did we keep knocking up
Those long high balls?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 It shouldn’t really matter who
We choose to play up front,
A tall and lanky kangaroo,
Or skinny little runt.
When we play it on the deck,
Our passing game enthralls,
But Jeez, I think I’ve cricked my neck –
Those long, high balls.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Versus Pats and versus Bray,
We knocked the ball round slickly.
It really took one’s breath away
To see it moved so quickly.
But when we play our village friends,
Enthusiasm palls,
Especially when our captain sends
Those long, high balls.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Long and aimless balls up front
Don’t often pose a threat.
Funny how attacks turn blunt,
Defences don’t break sweat.
After playing with so much style,
This tactic really galls,
Football should be played with guile,
Not long, high balls.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Defenders love those massive punts,
They’ll knock them back all night.
Even a defending dunce
Will head them out of sight.
This tactic briefly reared his head
In football’s marble halls,
But every centre half is fed
On long, high balls.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Propelling balls with altitude
May suit the GAA,
But football fans just find it crude,
And view it with dismay.
What’s the point in launching it
Up higher than St. Paul’s?
It doesn’t really gain to hit
Those long, high balls.
