Looking For Euro Highlights

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I’m looking out for highlights
and you may disagree
for some of you they’re lowlights
but they’ve still humoured me

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 and some may say the only
real highlights that we’ve seen
were those on TV late at night
but that’s a trifle mean
when maybe worth a mention
are those Croatia shirts
or Super Balotelli piling on the hurt
then standing like some statued god
his physique puffed and proud
or was it Ireland’s mighty choir
chorusing out loud?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Iniesta’s magic or Christiano’s grace
or sprawled Italians on the ground
clutching at their face?
while Pirlo floated everywhere
spraying balls like rain
or Alan Shearer banging on
and butting in again?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Or Lineker’s banale attempt
to use new trendy phrases
while yet another goal goes in
unseen by linesmen gazes
as endless waves from Mexico
or wher’ere they came from
stop and start like England did
until our hopes were gone

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 the stadiums and people
that we’d been warned to fear
conjured scenes of beauty
and such an atmosphere
as Germany fell short again
their flowing style surpassed
by Spain who still break records
for numbers of balls passed
whilst overhead that lightning
created such a sight
as endless rain just powered down
upon that mighty night

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 there’ve been a fair few late nights too
for Clik The Mouse and me
with all your poems and haikus
and word activity
but if we had to pick and choose
one gift from heaven sent
it’s obvious which one we’d pick
the moment or event
one person still anonymous
who needs to take the stand……
the bloke who had the wisdom
to ban the England band!
