Lucille

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It was love at first sight
On that crisp April night,
When the ball smacked the side of your face.
You gave a sharp cry,
And I caught your eye,
As it fell from its socket with grace.
The first time we kissed
I was totally drunk,
After beating Cobh Ramblers three two,
And as Galway marched on,
Your eyes fairly shone,
As I pledged my allegiance to you.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 You looked such a sight,
In your sarcastic white,
As you walked down the aisle in June.
The scarf that you wore
Matched the chapel’s décor,
Bedecked, as it was, in maroon.
Our honeymoon night
Was ecstatic delight,
As the lads took on Athlone away,
And we booked a hotel,
With full breakfast as well,
For the game up in Ballybofey.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille,
Four straight defeats and no sponsorship deal.
The team needs supporting,
But you’re out cavorting,
The whole thing is slightly surreal
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 But it wasn’t too long,
Before things went so wrong,
As Lim’rick took us to the cleaners,
And when Sligo won well,
It was footballing hell,
And a rift seemed to well up between us.
I came home in the dark,
Straight from Terryland Park,
You were airing your new winter coat.
And when Monaghan beat us
By several meters,
I found you curled up with the goat.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille,
Our performance ‘gainst Harps was too painfully real.
We’re dropping so quickly,
I’m feeling quite sickly,
And this time the hurting won’t heal.
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Now I stand here and watch,
As the team makes a botch
Of a season that started with hope.
And success has gone flat,
There’s more likelihood that
Ian Paisley will marry the Pope.
But throughout all the pain,
The fond memories remain,
And I’ll cherish them all to the end-
The Cup-tie in Cork,
And the win o’er Dundalk,
When we showed them how we could defend.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille,
Friday night football has lost its appeal.
Dreams of promotion
Are a fanciful notion
And words can’t describe how I feel.
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille,
Though our footballing love had begun to congeal.
Our sons and our daughters
Could be Galway supporters
Who knows what the fates might reveal?.
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille.
