Manchester Steel

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 High-sided buildings
On a cold Manchester road
The heat from the factory
Keeping the snow away

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The steel mill straddled the road
And provided work for the district.
Its men hardened by the heat
And heavy work.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Its days were dark and hot,
In summer and in winter
The foundry heat
Warming the streets around it.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The men worked hard
They drank hard
Their labours
Fed the streets around.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 A job for life at the mill.
They’ll always need steel.
It feeds our families
It feeds our streets

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 A change in times
A change in needs
The mill closes
The streets go cold

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Now the old steel
Lies beneath the new steel
Beneath the B-ang
Beneath the City of Manchester Stadium

Notes

A tenuous link to football, but driving past the stadium going to work brought back some very old memories of what the area used to be like.
