¶ 1

High-sided buildings
On a cold Manchester road
The heat from the factory
Keeping the snow away

The steel mill straddled the road
And provided work for the district.
Its men hardened by the heat
And heavy work.

Its days were dark and hot,
In summer and in winter
The foundry heat
Warming the streets around it.

The men worked hard
They drank hard
Their labours
Fed the streets around.

A job for life at the mill.
They’ll always need steel.
It feeds our families
It feeds our streets

A change in times
A change in needs
The mill closes
The streets go cold
¶ 7

Now the old steel
Lies beneath the new steel
Beneath the B-ang
Beneath the City of Manchester Stadium
