May Day at Marassi

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 “Shall I dance around a Maypole?
Take a first dip in the sea?
Shall I go and stare at paintings
In my local Gallery?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Shall I settle in my armchair,
Watch an old film on TV?
Shall I queue up for a ticket
For the Match at Marassee?”

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I weighed up all these options
When I rose that fine May morn.
The sun was shining brightly,
And the birds were in full song.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I couldn’t find a Maypole,
The sea still looked too cold,
No good films on the telly,
And the Gallery was closed!

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 My Destiny was carved in stone,
No choice was left to me:
“It’s Genoa-Verona,
And the kick-off is at three!”

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The game was a humdinger,
The atmosphere was great.
Well worth the fifteen euros
That I stumped up at the Gate…

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Most Tuesdays you will find me
In the Language Faculty.
A-teaching Business English
In a hot, cramped Aula E.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 A better way to spend one’s time
(I’m sure you’ll all agree),
Is cheering on your Heroes
At their Home called Marassee!

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 1/5/07
Denys E. W. Jones
