Mexico 1970

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Ghosts of Gerson, Cubillas and Muller
drifting, not as then, in black and white
but striding forth in glorious technicolour.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Exotic flowers make rockeries seem fuller
and I inhaled their nectar with delight
in dreams of Gerson, Cubillas and Muller.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Inevitably, some games seemed much duller
but memory has put them all to flight,
wiped away by glorious technicolour.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A world away from Grimsby versus Hull; a
world away from Bradford’s fading light,
these ghosts of Gerson, Cubillas and Muller.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 In England, sure, they had the odd crowd-puller,
seen on the box each seventh Saturday night,
but never watched in glorious technicolour.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 To boys like me, God, it was wonderful, a
feast to sate the fiercest appetite,
those ghosts of Gerson, Cubillas and Muller,
striding forth in glorious technicolour.

Notes

44 years on I still get a tingle remembering the excitement of my first World Cup
