Mike Doyle.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 We used to hate Mike Doyle
when I was a kid
because he was Man City
and we were Red.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 He was a defender
the old fashioned lot
that didn’t take prisoners
and could shut up the shop.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But he was quick as well
and could move the ball
he’d never let down his mates
we hated him above all.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Though mostly we hated him
because he was a fan
was born in Ashton
and was City, boy and man.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I grew up in Stretford
the Red side of town
where Doyle was a… so and so
for putting us down.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 In the Mank Evening News
he would have his dig
at Man United
and the state we were in.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Like Gary Neville
he nailed his heart on his sleeve
so that’s praise enough
coming from me.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Of course we didn’t hate Doyle
he just got under our skin
and now he’ll be remembered
as a footballer, and man.

Notes

Times change – now it’s hard to think anything (good or bad) about their players. But I still can’t help resenting City- it’s in the Red blood!
