Millfield of Dreams

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 IT WAS COLD AS I EXPECTED
SPRINGTIME HALTED IN IT’S STRIDE
IN THIS NORTH WEST CORNER OF DURHAM
WHERE FOLK ONCE LIVED AND WORKED WITH PRIDE.
FOR I’M AT AN AGE WHEN I CAN REMEMBER
THOSE GLORIOUS WEMBLEY DAYS
WHICH TO THE ELDERLY OF THE TOWN FOLK
NOW SEEM SO FAR AWAY.
THOSE BYGONE TIMES OF THE 50s
WHEN LADS LIVED THEIR SPORTING DREAMS
AND PROVIDED FOR THEIR FAMILY’S
IN THOSE RICH COAL MINING SEAMS.
THE CROWD IS RATHER SPARSE TODAY
AND THOSE DAYS WILL NOT COME BACK
BUT THERE IS STILL SOMETHING SPECIAL
ABOUT THAT SHIRT OF AMBER AND BLACK.

Notes

On Saturday April 11th I went along to watch Crook Town play in the Northern League and my thoughts went back to those glorious Amateur cup final triumphs of the 1950s in front of 100,000 at Wembley. The crowds like the Colliery’s are gone now but the club still plays on at MILLFIELD in those famous Amber and Black colours.
