Misplaced Support

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Goal celebrations, a smiling face
Gentleman’s handshake, warm embrace
Arms raised high, a ruffle of the hair
On flickering celluloid from yesteryear

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Innocence lost, clenched fist salute
Mask of hate from an ignorant brute
A kiss of the badge, a snort of the line
Ears cupped then an obscene sign

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Wrists held together, handcuffs made
Misplaced support, publicly displayed
No thought for a family torn apart
Another shot through football’s heart

Notes

David Norris, Blackpool v. Ipswich Town 8/11/2008.

Ipswich Town midfielder David Norris crossed his wrists in a “handcuffs” gesture when celebrating his goal for Ipswich Town against Blackpool. He said later that this was intended as a message for former team-mate Luke McCormick.

Former Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper McCormick was jailed for seven years for causing the deaths of Aaron Peak, 10, and Ben Peak, 8, after drinking at Norris’s wedding. McCormick was twice the drink-drive limit when he crashed into a car carrying the youngsters on the M6 in Staffordshire on 7th June 2008.
