More tomorrows please!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I crest the wave –
for all of a few seconds
then crash under water
spinning like a chased seal
and finally surfacing
spitting salt ‘n seaweed –
surfing just isn’t my ding-a-ling

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I crest the brow of the hill
puffing cheeks like a blowfish
then stare contentedly across the valley –
down on my village nestling
twixt babbling brook and verdant vale

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 look – there’s the new pitch, new dressing room –
so much to be proud of
and yet…
there’s something missing

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 for it’s a different code, a different land…

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 the crest that I crave
is hermetically sealed across my chest
and there’s no doubting
that it’ll be there forever…

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 but when the boys run out tomorrow
and do their stuff
and win the Prem – again…

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 I won’t be there
for I’m too far away
an emigré, turning grey
far across the sea –
but that sea of Blue
will ripple right from the start
and crash ashore
like a swell to my heart!

Notes

tomorrow: May 12th, 2017

WBA v CFC

If Chelsea win, we win the title.

And if I have egg on my face tomorrow, i.e. we lose or draw….

then, please God, there’ll be many more tomorrow’s.

Even if we win.
For every summer, it’s the same for everyone – we all start with the same dream!

But then…
maybe not everyone will make it to a season’s end.

Niall…. here’s hoping you do.

and hence the title (of the poem).

different code? Gaelic Football.

Updated note, August 2017:

Unfortunately, my brother-in-law Niall Ahern didn’t make it to the new season.

He died in June, fighting the cancer that took his life, not wanting to leave his wife and children and family and friends.
A good man taken too soon.
