My Hero

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 A Town hero from yesteryear
was winger David Moss;
strikers such as Eastoe
would Prophett from a cross.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Moustachioed, hunch shouldered run,
his pace was whippet quick;
jet-heeled he’d pass defenders
or beat them with a trick.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 He left the Town for Luton
causing Swindon fans much grief.
We would miss his mazy runs,
his flashing, dazzling teeth.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Before leaving for that other Town
he scored a hat-trick ‘gainst the U’s;
’78 was his best season,
goals scored in ones and twos.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 He returned from Luton to the Town
in the Lou Macari years,
but made only four appearances,
reducing fans, like me, to tears.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 I saw Mossy’s final goal
standing on a railway sleeper;
a strike against the Torquay Gulls
that whistled past the keeper.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 I never really realised
that Moss scored goals for fun:
in his first spell for the Robins
amassing eighty one.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Later Moss became the boss
of the Silkmen at Moss Rose,
never quite hit the dizzy heights
with a team of honest joes.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 I met Moss once many years ago
when he was playing cricket,
though he was clearly more at home
with ball at feet, not when at the wicket.

Notes

Dave Moss was an early hero of mine, playing for Swindon in the 1970’s. a good, old fashioned winger.
