My very first football match

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Holding my father’s hand
amongst the crowd
walking to the ground
singing nice and loud.
Inside getting excited
players warming up
could have been the league
or even the F.A. Cup.
My first ever match
watching my football team
my beloved Coventry City
reality and not a dream.
Dad said I just watched
but that I enjoyed it all
and when I got home
was straight out with my ball.
That was so many years ago
but it seems like just yesterday
and just like my Dad did for me
I’ve taken my sons to see the City play.
My father has passed on now
but I’ll never forget that day
when he took me to the match
to see my beloved Coventry City play.

Notes

This has been inspired by Stuart Ashworth’s excellent poem on his first trip to Anfield with his Dad. My club has never reached the heights of his Liverpool, but to me my club means just as much as his Reds do to him.
My father loved his club which I have carried on with to this day, but thanks to Stuart it has brought back happy memories.
