We woke to more than just presents –
A carpet of snow, a gift from nature
All too soon hoovered up
By young excited hands
Fighting off the equally energized
Patriarchal mitts
In a frenzy of white cannonballs
Fizzing past ducking ears
And a multitude of smiles

So it was brutally devastating the following morn
Boxing Day match scores faded into the background
And the might of the Toon Army
Paled into insignificance
As the power of tsunami
Became more and more apparent
Great tidal waves of destruction
Broached the land
Breached defences
And brunched on
Whoever and whatever
Lay in it’s path

Notes

With the deepest of sympathy and respect to anyone
who lost loved ones or homes
or were effected by the natural disaster
of the earthquake and the tsunami that followed
on Boxing Day, 2004, in the whole South-East Asia region.

And yes, parts of Ireland woke up to a White Christmas in 2004.
