Number Nine shirt.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I stood alone inside an empty St James’ Park
Closed my eyes for a few moments
And once again saw Jackie Milburn in full flight
As a chorus of The Blaydon Races
Echoed around the stadium.
I saw ten’s of thousands of black n white scarves
Twirling in the evening air
On Alan Shearer’s farewell appearance
And I believed that I was there.
Gallacher, Len White, Wyn Davies
All heroes on the Tyne
Cole, McDonald, and Ferdinand
Who all wore our number Nine.
Andy Carroll wears the shirt today
And with it comes expectation
And Iconic status now awaits
From a passionate geordie nation.

Notes

This is the short poem which I read on the BBCs Football Focus show on Saturday 11th September. I read the piece standing in Shearer’s bar just before the home game with Blackpool. The beeb wanted a poem on the Newcastle Utd number 9 shirt.
