O To Be In Tiverton Now The Final’s Here

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 i thought about it afterwards and drew a deep breath
how football’s not a matter of life and death –
but who was it said – it’s more important than that
and saturdays at three o’clock are empty and flat
without the taste of wonder – the smell of the urinal
wherever you are on the day of the Final –

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 and dear old Wembley silent in the sun
pageant-less and fan-less – and gone for everyone
and over in Cardiff’s Celtic-Euro setting
the latte and the lager crowd are very soon forgetting
our rattle waving ancesterors – every sweet May
but nobody’s walking up Wembley way

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 and standing in Tiverton microphone in hand
ranting to the shoppers who surely understand
that underneath the rhythm of the beautiful game
shopping with poetry… is really just the same
as being there in person the ball between our feet
and kicking off the final with a poem in in the street –
and there with the children – the mums and the dad
who surely found us quite bizzare -but what a day we had
and time flashed by in the festival of life
and suddenly the final score flashed across my eyes

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 and no missed sacred turf and no TV
from nine in the morning and thru til three
no more family squeezed into some room
shutting out the sunlight drinking in the gloom
no more electric surge at quarter to four
for twenty million cups of tea maybe even more
and no feeling cheated and no getting mad
no deep anger welling no more feeling sad
knowing that the game carries on inside us all
whether we listen or watch the game at all
for there in the poetry there in every line
there in ecentricity and maybe for all time
there with the winners and losers in despair
o to be in Tiverton now the Final’s here

Notes

On missing the Cup Final …in the furthering the spoken word of soccer prose and the duty of taking football poetry to the people..even if it also meant sadly missing The Eurovision Song Contest.
