Ode to Dennis

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Just seventeen games in charge,
now a part of Swindon’s history;
longer, yes, than Colin Todd,
but have you heard of loyalty?
Bitter pill for fans who
bellowed out your name
from the Nationwide and Town End.
In ’93 it was the same
when Bates took Hoddle away;
Papa Smurf comes back for more –
Dennis Wise AND Gus Poyet.
But, Dennis, beware, the knives are
being sharpened behind your back;
Leeds fans just don’t want you
and they’re ready to attack.
They don’t want anybody
with a Stamford Bridge connection;
I, for one, will jump for joy
when all you get is pure rejection.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Big names we’ve had this year
in the form of Wise and Ince,
but the moral of this sad tale
(it’s enough to make you wince)
is that big names soon move on
to where the grass is greener
to the pastures that are new
where they think the air is cleaner.
This leaves clubs like Swindon Town
fighting over scraps,
looking to unearth a gem
and to minimise mishaps.
In the past we’ve had Ardiles,
Hoddle, Macca, little Lou;
with the Dennis Wise defection
the next manager could be – YOU!

Notes

Written in high dudgeon after the hasty exit of messrs Wise and Poyet.
What price loyalty gentlemen?
