oh to win again

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I didn’t have to be here
in this particular spot
to know
to feel
to justify
to resolve
that I had to
that I wanted to
that I needed …
to win

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I was here in Tawin
under a big black moody sky
having cycled along the coast
watching an overlapping tide
take on my old full back role
and I just knew, just knew
that I had to be more like the foraging waves
and less like the receding shore
to position myself, once again
to play, to shoot, to score

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Fitness – not just the key
but the lock, the stock – and less of the barreled midriff

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Sod the aching back
the knackered knees
the higgledy hips
the heimlich’d hamstrings
the carbuncled ankles
such that the a’killered heel, was the least of it!

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Sod ‘em all
and talking of which, all was soon sodden
as the rain came pelting in, unmercifully, like a Mikel lunge –
I hoped it would pass – about as likely
as one from Ronaldo to Owen 🙁

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 But like the sun lurking behind the curtained clouds
I hope to make a re-appearance

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 I’ve reached the end of the road –
hopefully not, as in hanging up boots
or falsetto-ing Fräulein
but as in promontory, or hedge-lined headland
Meanwhile, cycling in the rain
is part of a get fit campaign
pending my transfer, to the bright side

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 As the cogs turn, my mind churns
a tune dances through my head…
the actual Fields of Athenry
are only a few miles away from this verdant wonderland
but this is not to be an ode, to the ‘Pool or ‘Tic
nor sonnet slick
no, for this pedaling poet
must meddling mow it …

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 “One man went to mow….”

Notes

The G series :
23rd July 2009
poems inspired by cycling around Galway, in particular Oranmore.
Just riding until the road runs out….
tonight, Tawin, nr Maree, Nr Oranmore.

A lovely spot; and I wrote this in situ – but within seconds I was soaked to the core and on my return had to quickly translate the sodden notes to the laptop before they became totally illegible.
