Old Trafford

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Rising like the Colosseum
On a sunny day in April. I remember
Sprinklers watering the pitch,
The polite public relations officers
And a busy camera crew. Angles,
Light, shutters, then
The smiling superstar. I can only
Imagine what it must be like
When, full to the rafters,
On a Saturday afternoon
In Manchester rain
Ruud van Nistelrooy
Tucks the winner away…

Notes

This is about my day at Old Trafford. I don’t want to say too much about the poem, because I want it to be a little oblique, so that the reader can fill in the gaps. ‘The smiling superstar’ was actually Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
