One Christmas Truce in the Supermarket

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 one Christmas in the supermarket
before the jam packed shelves
there’s children making havoc
with the homeless and the elves

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 while some go late to scour
the bargain cut-down stuff
there’s millions pouring in the tills
they just can’t get enough
the ‘hoorays’ with their Quail eggs
in Barbours all resplendent
while you and I blag free coffees
and grab our Independent

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 outside is cold and murky
and no-one bats an eye
as yet another Big Issue
seller struggles by
the snow is imitation
the car park says sold out
they’re fighting over loaves of bread
in case they all run out
they’re pushing in and bunking queues
Slade are blaring loud
you think it’s mad in London
you wanna live in Stroud

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 they’re tearing round for trolleys
our grand-dads fought for this
back in the days when little shops
were all that did exist

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 “we’ve got the children coming
I’m making my own suet
I’ve got to cook for thirty five
how am I going to do it?”
“its really hard for Henry
he’d love to get away
his rugger team kick off at twelve
at home on Boxing Day”

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 tis Christmas Eve the racks are bare
when suddenly the call
as someone kicks a fresh mince pie
and shouts out ..it’s your ball!
between the aisles a sudden peace
the shop’s about to close
they’re giving out free chocolates
they’re old ones I suppose

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 that Christmas in the first Great War
in stench and blood and grime
their football brought them closer
for one brief day in time
and though those TV wizards
exploit their act today
between the lines a match was played
upon that Christmas Day..

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 December twenty fourteen
a hundred years since men
laid down their guns to chat and play
between the lines again
that Christmas in the trenches
those men so cold and sad
I bet they never thought they’d end up
in a Sainbury’s ad

Notes

Editor Note :(OK me!)
Oh dear! .The Christmas Truce Dec 1914. Beautifully shot and in partnership with The Royal British Legion, but why oh why for a Sainsbury’s supermarket Xmas ad ? OK.. kids who’ve never heard of it are finding out about a true iconic and fragmentary moment/glimpse of peace in a horrendous war…but really… Christmas (in or in between the trenches) is for sharing… chocolate ?

Excuse me while I throw up.. You decide….
