One goal against and tempers fray
Our demeanour changes fast
As we Cech our tally once again
Like times tables in class.

As hurried ‘what if’ calculations
Arrive in angry heads
Another goal means deflation
To our slim chance of catching Fergie’s Reds

On betting slips and programmes
Our final fate is summed
As pencils, biros and fountain pens
Get to work on our outcome.
¶ 4

At three-o-clock it was easy
We only had to win
Then we found out to our chagrin
Liverpool had smashed four in.

I wish that plasma screen would fade and die
Like yesterdays dated news
I’m not interested in the score at The Stadium of Light
It just makes me confused.

Who’s got the easier run in
Who’s got to go Arsenal
Who’s playing those who have to win
In the fraught fight for survival?
¶ 7

I’m thinking as we leave the ground
Those permutations could drive us insane
One goal turned our world upside down
Let’s hope we don’t come to rue that one goal come next May!
