One Goal.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 One goal against and tempers fray
Our demeanour changes fast
As we Cech our tally once again
Like times tables in class.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 As hurried ‘what if’ calculations
Arrive in angry heads
Another goal means deflation
To our slim chance of catching Fergie’s Reds

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 On betting slips and programmes
Our final fate is summed
As pencils, biros and fountain pens
Get to work on our outcome.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 At three-o-clock it was easy
We only had to win
Then we found out to our chagrin
Liverpool had smashed four in.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I wish that plasma screen would fade and die
Like yesterdays dated news
I’m not interested in the score at The Stadium of Light
It just makes me confused.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Who’s got the easier run in
Who’s got to go Arsenal
Who’s playing those who have to win
In the fraught fight for survival?

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 I’m thinking as we leave the ground
Those permutations could drive us insane
One goal turned our world upside down
Let’s hope we don’t come to rue that one goal come next May!

Notes

Kinda of carrying on from the first poem, this is what happened at our place on Saturday as Bolton Wanderers almost rescue a result out of nothing from being four nought down to very nearly nicking at the very least an away point.

I could hear stagnant brain cells switched off for the holiday, all about me reluctantly clanking back in to action trying to quickly work out goal difference, for, against and who’s got to play who on the run in as the screen flashed up the score from the Sunderland v Man Yoo match, and Bolton..just kept on scoring!

All the above inspired by…one goal….it’s never ceases to amaze me how things can change so quickly during the course of ninety four minutes! When the extra four minutes came up on the touch-line board,
I swear I heard grown ups in tears, on their knees and praying for that all important final whistle of fulfilment!
